Sooo Donnie Darko movie. i have seen it twice but i am wondering if anyone else has actually got it straight?

so i am thinking....it was a time portal. thats how come the engine thingy dropped on his bedroom. and then he and everyone else just got caught up in some sort of time loop. or was he already dead and then...argggghhhh. help anyone?
