Discrimination for being shy/quiet?

i'm doing a course in a work place which most people get a job from afterwards, my mentor says she won't give me a job until i open out of my shell. i do all my work perfectly and answer questions that anyone has for me, but am too shy to just walk up to somone and start chattering away! Am i being discriminated againt? can people give me tips on how to open up more?
